East Riding Open Championship [ 2. Sep. 2011 - 17:39]

Hessle Golf Club, Thursday 1st September 2011.

James Drinkall, Professional at Allerthorpe, won the East Riding Union Open Championship at Hessle following an exciting play-off over 3 holes with Paul Lockwood (Hessle) and John Samuel (Hull).

Leaders after the morning round were Chris Gray (Cottingham), Paul Lockwood (Hessle) and defending champion Gary Brown (Ganton) all on 69, 3 under par. These were closely followed by Justin Sloan (Brough) 70 and Mark Lamb (Sutton Park) and James Drinkall (Allerthorpe) both 71.

The afternoon round unfolded with Chris Gray first of all dropping out of the picture with a 77 for a 146 total and Justin Sloan taking 76 to also total 146. John Samuel then sparked the tournament into life with a best of the day 66 to total 140 (4 under par). His figures of 334343346=33. 333444345=33 included 8 birdies!

Playing in the group behind, Paul Lockwood matched this total with a solid afternoon round of 71. Half an hour later James Drinkall birdied the last hole to also total 140. It was then left to see what Gary Brown could do, but unfortunately a disappointing front nine left him with to much to do, finishing with a 74 and a 143 total.

The trio of John Samuel, Paul Lockwood and James Drinkall  then set off on a three hole play off to decide the champion over holes 1, 2 and 9. When Paul Lockwood who was blocked out by the trees after his second shot on the par 5, ninth hole, 30 yards right of the green, narrowly missed his par, it was left to James Drinkall to roll in a 3 foot putt for his second East Riding Union Open title.
