East Riding Union Amateur Championship
Sunday 19th July 2009
Hainsworth Park Golf Club, 6362 yards, Par 71.

Conditions were far from ideal at Hainsworth Park for the East Riding Union Amateur Championship with showers persisting throughout the day, a couple of them thundery and heavy.

But this did not detract from a day of low scoring and wonderful golf with 25 rounds of par and better. Matching 67’s from Mat Daley (Hainsworth Park) and Mike Helyard (Hessle) lead the field after the morning round.

In the afternoon Phillip Wright (Driffield), the East Riding junior captain blitzed the course record with a superb 65 to set an early pace with an aggregate of 140. This 36 hole total was also matched by Alex Craig (Sutton Park), Andy Lockwood (Hessle) and Danny Taylor (Scarborough North Cliff).

But it was left to the morning leaders of Mat Daley, who was celebrating his 19th birthday, and over an hour later, 17 year old Mike Helyard who returned afternoon 68’s, to set up a play-off, tied on 7 under par totals of 135.

The first two holes of a three hole play-off were evenly contested with both players standing 1 under par on the 177 yard, Par 3, 18th tee. After both players had hit the green, Daley putted up close from 35 feet and tapped in for his 3. Helyard cooley rolled in his 18 foot putt for a Championship winning birdie.

The President of the East Riding Union, Phillip Lee presented Mike with the H W Collins Trophy, as Amateur Champion and also the Rob McLeish Cup for the best junior in the Championship, a trophy he has won for the last 3 years.

Mat Daley became Hainsworth Park’s first ever scratch player, an achievement of which his home club are very proud.
