East Riding Union at Ganton’s 125th Anniversary

The President, Howard Palmer, was pleased to accept an invitation from Ganton Golf Club, to enter a team from the East Riding Union in an Am-Am being staged as part of the Club’s 125th Anniversary celebrations.

Together with 25 other teams of Presidents and Captains of many clubs within the Union and further afield, the East Riding team, comprising the President, Geoff Drewery, Andy Woodhead and Alan Key, were treated to a perfect day. At last, the weather gods relented and provided the golfers with a cloudless sky, a mere breath of wind and a temperature more akin to that of the Iberian resorts.

The course was in fine condition, although ball searching in the thick rough took up an inordinate amount of time. The catering was also of the highest standard and delightfully served by staff dressed in maid’s uniforms of the 1890s.

As for the golf, the East Riding team acquitted themselves with some distinction, taking the runners-up prize with 76 points to Notts (Hollinwell) Golf Club’s 78. The most notable moment of the round came with 7 points on the short par 4 third hole where the President’s birdie was bettered by Alan’s six foot putt for an eagle 2.

The East Riding team wish to thank the Ganton Golf Club, its officials and staff for their hospitality and to wish the Club every success for the future.
