The HQ of the ERUGC hosted the final Members Meeting at Beverley's glorious Westwood and the course provided some great scoring (and some not so good) in good weather for most of the day until it chilled off later for the late starters.
176 members (88 pairs) turned out and there were nine returns of 43 points or better - early starters Goodwin and Heard ( Cave Castle ) returned the first 43 with a dropped shot on the 11th costing them dear as Club Colleagues - Ethan Gott and Tony Cave followed them in with the first 44 (with a dropped shot on the first) but enough to edge ahead of home club pair Terry Ives and David Weatherall.
44 points remained the leading score until mid afternoon from John Gray and Chris Hillan (Cave Castle) when a 45 with two dropped shots - par 3 4th and the 16th ) taking the shine off Hillan's Net eagle on the 10th ). Although Hessle's Bry Brown and Kev Harness equaled the Cave score though their Back 6 was not good enough to take 2nd place.
And so it remained until late starters Nick Bristowe (5) and John Nicholson (12) of Ganton returned a fantastic 46 points - with no dropped shots - and in thanking Beverley and the ERUGC, Nicholson did mention his Net eagle 2 on the 17th did sharpen their scorecard up !!
|1||Bry Brown, Phil Scott, Kevin, Harness, Ben Birtles (Hessle)||92 pts|
|2||Ryan Gray, Dennis Robinson, John Smith, Mark Woodmansey (Driffield)||89 pts|
|3||Nick Bristowe, John Nicholson, Chris Lupton (Ganton) Ben Emsley (Driffield)||89 pts|
|4||Arthur Calverley, Peter Mounfield, Garry Markham, Dak Roberts (Hornsea)||88 pts|
|5||Graham Foley, Allan Phillips, Steve Lambswood, Mike Fenton (Driffield)||88 pts|
|6||Baz Lukehurst, Jim Mitchell, Jim Hughes, Ken Kay (Scarborough NC)||88 pts|
A full turn out played a very hot (19.5 at 07.05 and rising ) Flamborough Head in wonderful benign conditions and the scores definitely reflected the conditions. When an 88 by the Hull quartet of Edward Clark, Stephen Larard, Allan Craig and John Chambers cannot get in the prizes with a Back Nine of 45 points it shows how entrants played!
A birdie fest saw three other teams scored 88 with Baz Lukehurst's Scarborough NC team with their only dropped point to the course coming on the 1st costing them dear and a back nine of 46, edged by Graham Foley's Driffield four whose 8 pointer on the 534 yard Par 5 11th gave them an inward 47 points. In fourth place with a back nine of 48 (also 88) was Arthur Calverley's Hornsea quartet beating the course on seven of the inward 9 holes.
For the second consecutive meeting the Nick Bristowe's Ganton/Driffield combo were in the prizes with a 89 with a dropped point to the course on the Par 4 Lighthouse View 14th hole costing them second place which was taken by Dennis Robinson's Driffield team who although also only having a 3 pointer on the last had three 7 pointers on their back nine.
Winners by a healthy margin were Bry Brown's Hessle squad with a magnificent 92 points - 44 out and a 48 coming in!
Peter Lappin, ERUGC's Registrar was unstinting in his praise of the Flamborough team on the day both on the course and in the clubhouse and hoped the Beverley & East Riding meeting on the 30th July would be equally as good.
|1||Roger Baron, Andy Kendrew, Peter Dawson & Steve Bielby (Cottingham Parks)||86 pts|
|2||Andrew Delgaty, Stuart Delgaty,Paul Gregory & Roger Patterson (Brough)||84 pts|
|3||Tony Hall (Driffield) , Nick Bristowe, John Harrison & John Nicholson (Ganton)||84 pts|
|4||Geoff Drewery, Stan Andrew, Mike Brown & Paul Whittingham (Driffield)||83 pts|
|5||Ken Hilton, Giles Horner, Will Webster & Jack Lister (Cottingham Parks)||83 pts|
|6||Howard Hill, Steve Corbett, Jeff Harrison & Gary Swales ( Cottingham Parks )||83 pts|
On a glorious summers day 43 teams did battle at a wonderfully presented South Cliff course - at that time of year, most players were commenting best of the season to date (Well done Shaun and team).
It was also a day when Cottingham Parks decided to re-enter the Winners Enclosure and had three teams in the Top 6.
Clear winners by two were Roger Baron's 4 ball, despite a 2 pointer on the short 4th (256 yds) edging the Andrew Delgaty 4 ball, with Paul Gregory scoring a Net eagle on the 16th who were the early leaders for most of the day. The Driffield/Ganton had a great 43 going out underpinned by Nicholson's Net 1 on the Par 3 7th but were beaten on the back 9 due to the Brough steady 42 and 42 points.
Notable other Front 9s included 6th place Cottingham 4 ball of Steve Corbett, Howard Hill, Jeff Harrison and Gary Swales who went out in 48 but were over par on the inward 9.
|1||Graham Collins 11 & Ben Birtles 14 (Hessle)||44 pts|
|2||Steve Hawkins 16 & Bob McBain 25 (Hornsea)||43 pts|
|3||Lawrie Hodges 16 & Peter Rae 20 (Hull)||43 pts|
|4||Steve Drake 19 (Hessle) & David Ramsden 21 (Cottingham Parks)||41 pts|
|5||Nick Russell 11 (Hessle) & Kelly Owen 20 (Hull)||41 pts|
|6||Paul Sullivan 12 & Eric Lusby 18 (Hull)||41 pts|
On a glorious day only 7 pairs out of the 88 entrants in the fourball betterball broke 40 points. Difficult greens seemed to be the cause except for the six prize winners above. Hull's Vice Captain Lawrie Hodges and Peter Rae were first off and were leading until late on with 43 points with net birdies from Peter on 1st, 3rd, 5th and Lawrie with a Net Eagle on the 6th allowing them to turn on 23 points ( dropping a point on the short Par 3 8th). Back 9 honours went to Lawrie with Nett Birdies on 12, 14 and 18.
They were only surpassed by Hornsea's Hawkins and McBain with an inward 21 points; net birdies on 5th and 9th and another net eagle on the 6th for Steve with Bob having a net Birdie on the 8th. The back 9 had Steve taking Net Birdies on 11 & 12 with Bob nett Birdying the 16th.
Late starters Collins & Birtles stole the show with 44 points with Birtles off a dangerous 14 handicap net birdieing on 1st & 9th with a net eagle, the back 9 allowed Collins to take the 11th and 17th with net birdies with a gross birdie on the 12th and Birtles rounding things off with a net birdie on the 18th.
Thanks to all at Hull Golf Club for putting on a great day!
