EAST RIDING V HARROGATE UNDER 18’S AT HULL, 15TH AUGUST 2016

EAST RIDING V BRADFORD UNDER 18’S AT BURSTWICK COUNTRY GOLF, 29TH JULY 2016

The fifth match of the YIDU season for the East Riding team was played at the Burstwick Country Golf on friday 29th July. The golf course was presented in fantastic condition and the hospitality was again first class. Thanks to Alan Key and all his staff for the extra effort they put in to make the day run so smoothly. Play got underway at 10am with the forecast rain coming down strongly and a significant breeze to cope with. Playing was at times difficult but it didn’t stop both teams from making lots of birdies. All six matches soon followed similar patterns with neither team taking control. Match one reached the 18th with Joe Allenby and Ben Ratcliffe 1 down and after a fine drive at the home hole the birdie 3 was only good enough to half the hole and Bradford took the opening point.

James Halford and Michael Patterson in match two also halved the 18th hole, this time with pars, to get a well deserved half. Lewis Hunt and Charlie Milner played Bradford’s strongest pairing and matched them stroke for stroke and with a fantastic composed performance secured another half for the East Riding. Next were debutant Jamie Bancroft and his partner Jude Tarbotton who after taking an early lead battled hard and again finished on the 18th hole all square. With the East Riding trailing, up stepped Tom Duck and Matty Atkinson who were in commanding form for 12 holes and had a four hole lead. Once again back came Bradford and the match reached the 18th with Tom and Matty 1 up. Matty hit a fantastic drive just short of the green and with a deft chip from Tom the point was secured and the match back to even at 5 points all.

Alfie Tidder Tee Shot

Finally Jack Maxey did a great job for the team dropping down the order to shepherd his clubmate Alfie Tidder in his first match for the union to the final point of the morning. Alfie showed he has the game and temperament to compete at this level and with Jack’s advice they ran out 2 and 1 winners.

At lunch we held a slender 7-5 lead over Bradford and with Captain Joe Allenby leading the team off in the singles it was important to get the momentum early. Joe did this with ease as he finished his match with a 4/3 victory against scratch golfer Ben Rhodes. Michael Patterson was next and was again engaged in a close match which again went all the way finishing in a point for each side. With Joe and Michael back out supporting the tide had definitely turned as Ben Ratcliffe won 2/1 and Tom Duck continued his fine form with a best of the day 8/7 win.

Bradford needed a response but the East Riding boys have got into the winning habit and the wins kept coming. James Halford who had taken the day off work to play won 4/3 followed by the in form Jack Maxey 7/5. Wins from Lewis Hunt 2/1, Jude Tarbotton 1up, Charlie Milner 5/4 secured in the end a comfortable win over a well drilled Bradford team. Jamie Bancroft won 2/1, going undefeated for the day on his debut and Matty Atkinson is still yet to taste defeat since he started playing for the team this year halved his match. Last up was Alfie Tidder who in his first match played some great shots but just ran out of steam losing 2/1 on the 17th hole. What a great day for the boys and officials who attended.

Special thanks to President Howard Palmer for the refreshments and fruit giving the boys the required energy. Steve Thornton ( vice president) John Illingworth (secretary) provided much needed encouragement throughout the day of which we are most thankful. Stephen Robinson was again in fine form as the starter and I’m sure that Ivor Robson will be calling him up soon for the Open next year.

This win puts the East Riding joint top of the table with Sheffield on 4 wins and 1 defeat. The next match is away at Catterick against Teesside on the 12th August, who are also in the hunt for this year's title, with our final match at Hull the week after. Well played everyone see you at Catterick GC.

EAST RIDING V HALIFAX & HUDDERSFIELD UNDER 18’S AT HORNSEA GC, 10TH JULY 2016

Hornsea Golf Club was again in splendid condition for our fourth fixture of the season against Halifax & Huddersfield. This was the first time we had home advantage and the team were in a positive frame of mind going into the morning foursomes.

Things didn’t get off too well as we lost the two opening matches to some solid golf by the Hal' & Hudds' pairs. It looked odds on to lose match three as Brendan Wright and Jack Maxey found themselves 2 down with 4 holes to play. Brendan then hit a fantastic drive on the long 15th hole and after a solid second from Jack found the green a par was good enough to win the hole. Another big drive on the par five 16th, this time from Jack, resulted in another win as the Hal' & Hudds' players were forced into going for too much with their second shot.

Onto the par three 17th and the momentum continued when Brendan found the green and Jack rolled in the birdie putt to go 1 up with one hole to play. Both pairs parred the 18th; the comeback was complete and the momentum was well and truly in our favour. Lewis Hunt and Charlie Milner won 4&3, Tom Duck and Matty Atkinson won 4&2 and James Halford and Josh Raynor finished the foursomes with a fine 6&5 win. The score at lunch was 8-4 when it looked like it was going to be 6 points all. The win from Brendan and Jack changed the whole feeling of the match going into the singles.

The first four matches were shared evenly with Matty Raybould winning 2&1 with five birdies and Tom Duck coasting to a 5&4 win to go unbeaten on the day. More wins came thick and fast as we demolished the Hal' & Hudds' team with some great golf on a beautiful course.Brendan Wright 1up, James Halford 4&3, Lewis Hunt and Jack Maxey both 7&6, Jude Tarbotton 3&2, Josh Raynor 4&3, and Matty Atkinson 6&4.

The performance of the afternoon came from Charlie Milner who found himself 4 down after the front nine holes. We have been working as a team on being more positive and just focusing on the next shot and hole and not getting too focused on how bad or well things are going. Charlie managed to half the 10th hole after just missing a putt for birdie and with a new focus he started hitting great shots and put the pressure back on his opponent. He then won 5 out of the next 6 holes to get 1up with 2 holes to play.

The rest, as they say, is history. Charlie showed his best qualities under adversity and showed the fighting spirit we will need going forward. This result will now put the East Riding joint top with Sheffield in the YIDU league after 4 matches, with 3 wins and 1 defeat.

We are now looking forward to visiting Burstwick Country Golf on 29th July against Bradford Union which will be another difficult challenge.

EAST RIDING V YORK UNDER 18’S AT KIRKBYMOORSIDE GC, 12TH JUNE 2016

The third match of the season for the East Riding under 18’s went ahead at Kirkbymoorside despite the torrential overnight rain. The green staff did a fantastic job and presented the course in excellent condition.

The team was in great spirit having put to bed their last defeat by Sheffield two weeks ago. With the return of Joe Allenby and Ben Ratcliffe and Matty Atkinson making his first appearance the plan was to leave our egos aside and play for each other in the morning foursomes.

The day got off to a great start with Ratcliffe and Allenby winning 4/2 and Raybould and Tarbotton 7/6. York fought back and took the next two matches from Patterson and Raynor 1up and Duck and Lewis by the same score. Halford and Maxey got things going again fighting to a 2up win and Wright and debutant Atkinson finished their match with a comfortable 4/3 victory.

Eight points to four up at lunch going into the singles saw the weather close in and torrential rain made things hard going. The greens became saturated but it didn’t stop our progress as Allenby found top gear to run out a 6/4 winner. Raybould put in another captain’s performance easily winning 4/3. Defeat for Patterson and Halford equalled things for York but our strength in depth showed as Duck dispatched his opponent 8/6, Ratcliffe won 2/1 as did Wright. The wins just kept coming as Lewis Hunt 4/3, Jack Maxey 3/2, and Josh Raynor got his first win  for the union by 2 holes to one.The performance of the day came from Matty Atkinson as he took to union golf instantly, winning 5/3.

The singles were won 9 matches to 3 which left the final score 26 points to 10 to the East Riding. This was our second away victory of the season and our next match at home to Halifax/Huddersfield is at Hornsea on July 10th.

Thanks to Steve Thornton who was deputising for President Howard Palmer for his fantastic help and encouragement throughout the day. Phil Woodcock and Steve Raybould are very proud of the boys who once again were a credit to the East Riding throughout the day.

SHEFFIELD V EAST RIDING UNDER 18’S AT BONDHAY GC, 3RD JUNE 2016

LEEDS V EAST RIDING UNDER 18’S AT MOOR ALLERTON GC 2ND MAY 2016

The first match for the ERUGC Under 18’s season was played at the Moor Allerton golf club in Leeds on bank holiday monday. It was great to see the team all together ready to face a strong Leeds team on their home turf.

Matty Raybould and Ben Ratcliffe got the match under way and soon took command of their match, going 4 up through 11 holes. Leeds fought back as expected winning 3 successive holes but Ben and Matty held strong to win 3/1 for our first point. Next up, Alex Limb and Matty Jessop became the first of 10 matches that went the full 18 holes and they triumphed by 1 hole after a late burst by the Leeds boys. The 3rd pairing of Michael Patterson and James Halford played a similar game with both teams having the lead over the long Moor Allerton course. A solid last hole was good enough for James and Michael to win our 3rd match of the day. Match 4 saw Lewis Hunt and Tom Duck also play the full 18 holes fighting all the way to a halved match. This gave Leeds their first point of the day and it looked like match 5 would be their first win.

The Leeds team had played their way to a 3 up lead with only 4 holes to play, and after a few words of encouragement from the East Riding Officials the pairing of Jude Tarbotton and Charlie Milner won holes 15 and 16 with good pars and after a fine birdie 3 at the 17th found themselves all square and again playing the 18th. The scene was set and the boy’s didn’t let us down as they completed a sensational comeback winning the 18th with a solid par 5. Last out Brendan Wright playing his first match partnered Jack Maxey and after some excellent early golf just lost out 3/2 to give Leeds their first win.

The winter training and hard work from the East Riding boys paid off with the Leeds team suffering a 9-3 foursomes defeat going into the afternoon singles.

The singles had a different feel to it as Leeds came out of the blocks fast winning 4 of the first 5 matches. Matty Raybould lost to his fellow Yorkshire team member Tom North 5/3 as did Michael Patterson 1down, Alex Limb 1down and Tom Duck 3/2. Matty Jessop reached the 18th hole for his second time and secured a 2up win with some great golf. This left the East Riding needing another 4 wins for victory and Lewis Hunt was the first to step up with a fine 6/5 win over his much older opponent. Brendan Wright got his first point winning the 18th hole in another 1up victory. This seemed to open the floodgates and wins from Ben Ratcliffe 2/1, Jack Maxey 3/1, Jude Tarbotton 4/3, and Charlie Milner with yet another final hole thriller winning 1up.

Finally a half from James Halford secured a 15-9 singles win and the match ended in Leeds suffering their first home defeat for 3 years by 24 points - 12. Ten of the eighteen matches reached the final hole of which we won 7. This is a great sign moving forward and just proves if you stay in the match and put pressure on the opponents we have the winning mentality. East Riding vice president Steve Thornton was a great help filling in for Howard Palmer who was attending the senior team’s visit to Slayley Hall. Howard did drive back for the conclusion and enjoyed the after match meal and speeches. Thank you Steve and Howard. A great start to our season and on behalf of Steve Raybould and Phil Woodcock can we thank all the players and parents for their support and commitment.

Once again you are a credit to the East Riding and played in the correct spirit with smiles on your faces throughout.

The next match is at Bondhay Golf Club on Friday the 3rd of June against Sheffield.
